Gay Party Tix’s New York City (NYC) Health Clinics Cheat Sheet – Updated June 2024

A helpful guide for gay men visiting or living in New York City (NYC) looking for HIV/STI testing, PrEP/PEP . New York City has dozen of health services and benefits for gay and bisexual men looking to get tested and/or seek treatment for any STI/HIV or other health needs.

New York City is one of the many sanctuary cities where any non-US citizen can reason receive safe haven from any prosecution of immigration violations. With that being said, I have compiled a list of clinics that provide healthcare services for everyone seeking any sexual health related issues.

The way system works with the city of New York is that clinics are designated for specific services and that there is no one “catch all” clinic that does everything. So, I took the info from the NYC HEALTH website and highlighted the information that relates to gay men as well as STI/HIV programs provided by local hospitals.

HERE ARE A LIST OF SERVICES AVAILABLE IN THE NEW YORK CITY

STIs (SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS)

PrEP (PRE-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS)

PEP (EMERGENCY POST-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS)

PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is emergency medicine that can prevent a new HIV infection.

  • Take emergency PEP if you may have been exposed to HIV
  • Start PEP as soon as possible, and no more than 72 hours after exposure
  • Take PEP pills as prescribed, every day for 28 days

To start emergency PEP right away, call the NYC 24/7 PEP Hotline at 844-3-PEPNYC (844-373-7692).

You can also go to a clinic, emergency room or NYC Sexual Health Clinic and ask for PEP to prevent HIV, or use the NYC Health Map to find an experienced PEP provider.

Emergency PEP can protect you if you had anal or vaginal sex or shared drug injection equipment in the past 72 hours with someone who may have HIV.

You do not need PEP if you were using condoms or taking PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), or if your partner is taking HIV treatment and has an undetectable level of HIV. PEP is not usually recommended after sex that has a lower risk of spreading HIV, like oral sex.

Doxy PEP

Doxy PEP is now available at the Central Harlem, Corona, Morrisania, and Fort Greene clinics. To learn more about doxy PEP, see Clinic Services Provided or read About Doxy PEP (PDF).

ELIGIBILITY

In Español (Spanish)

Sexual Health Express Clinics are only for patients who need testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV. You are not eligible for Sexual Health Express services if you:

  • Have STI symptoms, such as an itch, rash, sore or discharge.
  • Have a sex partner with an STI.
  • Were contacted to come into any Sexual Health Clinic.
  • Need PEP, PrEP, HIV treatment, emergency contraception (Plan B), syphilis treatment or vaccines.
  • Need to see a doctor, nurse or counselor.

If you need other sexual health services you can visit the Sexual Health Clinic located in the same building.

FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED

Services are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Sexual Health Express Clinics are busy and may stop accepting patients before the posted closure time, especially during evening hours.

VISITING SEXUAL HEALTH EXPRESS CLINICS

After you determine that you are eligible for Sexual Health Express testing, you will:

  • Fill out a form to help us figure out what services you need.
  • Meet with a staff member to get tested for HIV and learn how to collect other specimens.
  • Get your blood drawn to test for syphilis and receive additional HIV testing, if necessary
  • Collect your own specimens to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea. This may include urinating in a cup and swabbing your own throat and buttocks.

TEST RESULTS

The Quickie Labs at the Sexual Health Express Clinics provide rapid testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea. In most cases, test results are available within hours of your visit.

Rapid HIV test results will be available in minutes. Results for syphilis and any additional HIV testing will be available 10 days after your visit.

OTHER EXPRESS TESTING LOCATIONS

All Sexual Health Clinics offer express testing services. Patients who do not have symptoms can go to one of those locations to get tested for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV without having to see a nurse or doctor.

Fort Greene and Chelsea Express are the only locations where express testing services are offered in a separate space, making it fast and easy to get routine testing for STIs, including HIV. They are also the only locations with a Quickie Lab, which provides rapid test results for chlamydia and gonorrhea.

PrEP to Prevent HIV

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is safe and effective medicine that prevents HIV.

To get started on PrEP, talk to your health care provider, or visit an NYC Sexual Health Clinic. You can find clinics that provide PrEP by visiting the NYC Health Map or calling 311. Your PrEP provider will test you to make sure you do not have HIV.

Taking PrEP

PrEP is available as a daily pill or an injection you get every two months.

Daily PrEP

  • Once a day: Take a pill that contains a PrEP medicine – either Truvada (available as a generic) or Descovy.
  • Every 3 months: Check in with your provider to refill your prescription and get tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Some clinics offer check-ins by phone or video chat.

Injectable PrEP

  • Every 2 months: Visit your provider to receive an injection of the PrEP medicine Apretude, and to get tested for HIV and other STIs.
  • Talk to your provider before you stop taking injectable PrEP.

COVID-19: Express Testing

You can make an appointment for a free COVID-19 test at the Health Department’s COVID Express sites throughout the city. Test results are available within 24 hours or less of your visit. This means that most patients will receive their test results on the same day as their visit.

All tests performed at these sites are PCR-based laboratory diagnostic tests. PCR tests can detect the virus even if there is only a small amount in your system.

COVID-19 tests at COVID Express sites are free to all New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status.

Our sites have expanded services to include testing for other respiratory viruses (affecting breathing), including flu and RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus). Staff will let you know more during your visit.

Some COVID Express testing sites also have other clinical service, such as testing for sexually transmitted infections. Get more information about available clinic services on the NYC Health Clinics webpage.

How to Schedule and Get Results

Testing is available by appointment only. To make an appointment, choose a time on the online scheduler below.

After your test, you can get your results:

  • Online by creating a MyChart account.
    • After scheduling your appointment, you will receive a link to create an account. You may also already have an existing account from a previous visit to an NYC Health + Hospitals facility that you can use to view your results.
  • By returning to the clinic two to three business days after your test to pick up printed results.

Positive Test Result

If you test positive, you will receive a call from the clinic.

People who had confirmed COVID-19 in the past 90 days (meaning they tested positive using a viral test) and recovered do not need to get tested unless they develop symptoms. People may test positive with a PCR test for weeks or months after infection, even though they are not contagious. For this reason, any COVID Express testing appointments made within 90 days of a positive test will be canceled.

If you have recovered from COVID-19 and now have new symptoms of COVID-19, talk to a health care provider, especially if you recently had close contact with someone who has COVID-19.

If you receive a positive result for Flu A, Flu B, or RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), call your health care provider to discuss treatment. If you are an older adult, have an underlying health condition, or the positive test was for your child, your provider may have more instructions for you to stay safe and continue care.
